Summary from GoodReads:

Three sisters share a magical, unshakeable bond in this witty high-concept novel from the critically acclaimed author of Audrey, Wait! Around the time of their parents’ divorce, sisters April, May, and June recover special powers from childhood–powers that come in handy navigating the hell that is high school. Powers that help them cope with the hardest year of their lives. But could they have a greater purpose?

April, the oldest and a bit of a worrier, can see the future. Middle-child May can literally disappear. And baby June reads minds–everyone’s but her own. When April gets a vision of disaster, the girls come together to save the day and reconcile their strained family. They realize that no matter what happens, powers or no powers, they’ll always have each other.

Because there’s one thing stronger than magic: sisterhood.

My Thoughts

You guys, you guys, you guys, why have I waited so long to read Robin Benway’s books?  I absolutely LOVED Also Known As, so I was eager to read her other books.  I decided to go with The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May & June next for a couple reasons.  The first being that I wanted to save Audrey, Wait! for last (because I’ve heard it is freaking amazing) and because April told me that she really liked this one.  I ordered it from Amazon, and once it arrived at my house, I read it right away.  And let me tell you all, I love Robin Benway!  She’s funny, and her characters are always well-developed and she is just all around awesome.

So, I’m an only child.  And as a kid I loved being an only child.  I got all my parents attention, and I was definitely prone to some jealousy as a kid, so even better.  But now that I am an adult, I do wish I had a brother or sister.  Actually, I would love to have sister specifically.  I see how close my mom is with her sisters, and I sometimes I wish I had that.  Although, I totally have a pseudo-sister.  But anyway, my little story is because I wanted to explain how much I enjoyed the relationships between April, May and June.

That said, April, May and June argue a LOT!  As I mentioned above, I have no idea how often sisters argue, especially sisters so close in age (they are all about 1 year apart).  I imagine that is pretty accurate.  I admit to getting a little frustrated with all the arguing.  I wanted maybe a few scenes where they were all getting along and having a good time.  But I totally got that they loved each other like crazy, even if they drove each other nuts.

Robin Benway, being the completely fabulous writer that she is, totally gives each sister her own personality.  But even though they are all different, I could still relate to each of them in different ways.  April, the eldest, is completely type-A, must get good grades, and watch out if she catches you littering!  And although I might not go after litterbugs, I’m definitely type-A!  May is the middle child.  She’s a bit on the angsty side, and feels like no one sees her.  I found her particularly interesting because my mom is the middle sister, and it brought back some stories my mom told me about her being a middle child.  June is the bubbly, extrovert.  She wants lots of friends, and is totally interested in fashion.  Oh my gosh, and when June gets all frustrated with her bangs – yeah that was totally me in high school!  How my day was going was completely dependent on how my bangs looked!

So obviously I loved the main characters.  The story was interesting.  I liked how each sister developed their own supernatural power.  I wish a little more was explained about where these powers cam from, and what’s next for the girls.  I also thought that April over reacted a bit to her visions of the future.  Like, why did she think that a certain boy was up to no good just because he was at the same place as her sister?  I couldn’t quite get her reaction.  Maybe a few more scenes explaining Aprils fear would have helped.

But all that aside, I really liked this book!  I’m loving Robin Benway’s books, and I just have one more to read – Audrey, Wait!  I went to a stop of the Triple Threat Tour featuring Benway.  And she was such a fun speaker and reader!  If you ever get the chance to go to an event where she is – go!  You will not be disappointed.  And of course, read her books!  So far Also Known As is my favorite, but I haven’t read Audrey yet.

I think you’ll love Audrey, Wait- it’s so funny! Glad you got the chance to go to the Triple Threat blog tour, it sounds like a blast. Sister books are so fun, and yeah sisters fight a lot so it sounds pretty accurate 🙂 Looking forward to reading this one sometime!

Ooh, fantastic review! I read The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May & June a few years back and really enjoyed reading it, though I have to agree that there were some things in Robin Benway’s characters that just didn’t agree with me.

This one appeals to me less than Also Known As, but once I read that, I’m sure I’ll turn to this one because Benway’s writing is just so much FUN! I recently read Audrey, Wait! and absolutely loved it, can’t wait to see what you think.

I definitely liked Also Known As more than this one. I cannot wait to read Audrey, Wait! I’ve heard such wonderful things about it.
