Monthly Favorites: November 2013

So,way back when (about a year ago) I used to do these Monthly Favorites posts, inspired by all the makeup videos I see on Youtube each month.  But I discontinued them, because I thought they were kind of boring.  However, I’ve come across some other book blogs to do something similar, but they include other favorites.  So I’m revamping my Monthly Favorites!

Favorite Read of September

Even though I read fewer books in November than October, it’s still really difficult for me to chose a favorite.  I am going with three this week 🙂

Game by Barry Lyga
The Secret by Julie Garwood
How to Marry a Marquis by Julia Quinn
I have read both The Secret and Marquis before, many times actually, and these two are some of my favorite comfort reads ever.

Obsession of the Month

Doctor Who
Yes, it’s another TV Show that I’m obsessing over.  In October I was obsessed with I Love Lucy, and in November I’ve been addicted to Doctor Who.  I admit that it did take me a bit to really get hooked, but now I am.  I have finished series 4 (my favorite so far) and can I just say how much I LOVE Catherine Tate as Donna and David Tennant as the Doctor.  Oh my gosh, and that episode with Doctor Donna!  It was so awesome, and funny and I was so happy for Donna – but the end!  How can a TV show be so campy, so funny, and so freaking heart-wrenching all at the same time!?
Soon I will be getting to  Matt Smith, though, and I’m really excited to meet him.  I know so many people love him as the Doctor.

The Good . . .

  • Thanksgiving, to be sure.  Not only was it wonderful to spend time with my family, but I got to meet my cousin’s baby girl, Sara, for the first time.  She’s such a cutie.
  • Talking about Julie Garwood with Heidi (YAbibliophile) on Twitter.  It’s always so nice to discover someone else who loves the same books as you do.
  • Heidi sending me a giant box of romance books to read.  Woot!!  Thanks, Heidi.

The Bad . . .

  • Driving home in a terrible snowstorm on Thanksgiving evening.  I am used to driving in snow (I do live in Syracuse) but holy cow this was awful and completely nerve-wracking.
  • One of my best friends canceling again on  me.  I’m not really mad, but I was totally disappointed.  I understand that we’re both so busy, but I’m not able to see her as much as I would like it.

And the Ugly.

  • This isn’t physically ugly, but the worst part of this month was dealing with some issues at work.  I’ve talked about it on the blog before, so I won’t go into a ton of detail, but it was so incredibly stressful.  It’s better now, but not completely resolved.  And it still stresses me out if I allow myself to think too much about it.  Because of these stresses, I pulled out some of my favorite comfort reads (see above – Julie Garwood and Julia Quinn) and I’ve loved revisiting some of their books.

What’s Next for November?

  • My mom’s birthday!  Okay, so mom’s birthday is December 1, and we’ve already celebrated, but it’s still awesome.
  • Christmas – duh!

How was your month?  What went well?  And what sucked?

Ahhh!! Donna is probably my favourite companion honestly, although I love other things I can’t say because of spoilers but I am so glad you’ve gotten into the series! It’s definitely a bit strange and corny at first. I’m glad that at least if I don’t have friends who read YA like I do, I have plenty who love Doctor Who and Sherlock.

Love this! I was obsess watching Doctor Who last month too! Had I known you were we could’ve chatted! 🙂 And Julie Garwood… while I know her books are adult, she is one of those writers I grew up reading. I’ll pull out her books whenever I feel down or just need a good comfort read. Glad you had a good month (minus the work stuff) and are starting to do these again! 🙂

Excited to hear you are enjoying Doctor Who – one of the best things about the show is that it really has something for everyone (my favorite new series era is the Matt Smith – hope you enjoy!).

I’m into the Matt Smith episodes now. I really like them, and Matt Smith. But David Tennant might be my favorite. I can’t wait to get caught up so I can watch the 50th Anniversary special and see them TOGETHER!

I’m glad you had a happy thanksgiving… minus the snowy trip home! Also good to hear that your work stress seems to be heading in a better direction. Work drama is the absolute worst because you can’t even avoid it.
I keep debating whether or not to read Shadowlands…
