Summary from Amazon:
Fool’s Gold, California, a charming small town that’s short on men, has captured thousands of readers’ hearts in Susan Mallery’s New York Times bestselling series. Fall in love with Fool’s Gold’s beloved characters and heartwarming romance in Only Us: A Fool’s Gold Holiday novella!
Pet groomer Carina Fiore wants nothing more than to confess her feelings to the man she loves. She’s drawn to veterinarian Cameron McKenzie’s good looks, caring nature and especially his devotion to his young daughter. But he’s also her boss and a good friend. Putting her heart on the line could cost Rina both her job and their friendship forever.
Since his divorce, Cameron hasn’t been willing to trust his heart–or his daughter–with anyone else. For months he’s pushed away all thoughts of taking Rina in his arms and kissing her, unwilling to risk their friendship for a single night of pleasure. But when a kiss under the mistletoe unlocks the simmering passion between them, Rina and Cameron may just find love for the holidays after all….
So I haven’t really been full of holiday spirit this year. I’m not all Scrooge-like or anything, I just haven’t been all excited for Christmas. However, after seeing so many bloggers reviewing holiday books, I thought I might try to read a few to help me get all Christmas-y. Also, I’ve been in a total romance mood as well. So I did a little search and discovered Only Us, a Christmas novella from Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold series. Reading Only Us was exactly what I had been looking for.
Barely over 50 pages, Only Us is a super quick, easy-going, and sometimes cheesy read. But despite the cheesiness, I really did enjoy reading this novella. What can I say, I love an unrequited love story. Carina has been crushing hard on local veterinarian Cameron since he came into town. It’s a little more complicated than just crushing on someone, though, because Carina also works for Cameron (she’s the groomer at his vet’s office), and she watches Cameron’s daughter, and really loves her. Carina is afraid to risk losing her best friend, Cam’s daughter, and her job. I could totally relate to Carina’s fears. I mean, understand normal standards I have a hard time telling someone I like him. But add those other factors in, and it would be near impossible.
Cameron is a nice guy, but a bit traumatized after his first marriage fell apart. His first concern is his daughter, naturally. And you guys, he’s a total animal-lover. How can you not love a guy who helps animals? Of course, his fears are a little typical in the romance area, but it wasn’t really annoying, and not so bad for a novella.
I really enjoyed reading Only Us. It’s such a fast read (perfect if you’re behind on your reading goals since it’s almost the end of the year!), but it isn’t really full of action. I was really rooting for Cam and Rina to get together because I could tell that they would make a great couple. They had a lot in common – love of animals, family, Fool’s Gold – and they’re also independent people who have their own interests, too. And even though Only Us is not the first book in the series, I had no problem following along. In fact, it felt like a standalone story.
I’m definitely interested in reading more Fool’s Gold books, and soon. If you like contemporary romance, you should give this one a try. And if you’ve read the Fool’s Gold series, which ones are your favorite? Which ones should I read first? Must I read them in order?
