The first novel in New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden's sizzling LOST series introduces the Last Option Search Team, an elite unit that must protect the only surviving victim of a serial killer.

Ex-SEAL and LOST founder Gabe Spencer is accustomed to the unusual in his job. But when knockout Eve Gray steps into his office, he's rattled. For the mysterious woman is a dead ringer for the heiress thought to be the latest prey of the serial killer who goes by the name Lady Killer.

When Eve awoke in an Atlanta hospital, her past was a blank slate. Then she recognized her own face in the newspaper and vowed to learn the truth. Determined to confront the nightmares hidden in her mind, she never expects to find a partner in Gabe.

As Gabe and Eve work together, their explosive attraction becomes irresistible. Gabe knows that his desire for Eve is growing too strong, bordering on a dangerous obsession, but nothing pulls him away from her. And when another Eve lookalike disappears, Gabe vows to protect Eve at all costs. While Eve may have forgotten the killer in her past, it's clear he hasn't forgotten her.

Despite the fact that I don’t read a lot of Romantic Suspense these days, it was actually how I was introduced into the romance genre. I used to read mysteries and suspense novels (because that’s what my mother read) and somehow I came across Romantic Suspense novels. Thinking they were mysteries/suspense, I read them. There was a bit of comfort there, because I was familiar with the suspense aspect. It wasn’t until after reading a number of these that I realize what I loved the most was the romance aspect, and from there started exploring the romance genre. So I have a soft spot for Romantic Suspense.

When I saw Broken by Cynthia Eden in my second Avon Addicts box, it was the first book I read. I started it, and simply couldn’t put it down. Broken is intense, and definitely on the darker side, and things move along very quickly. It’s definitely an excellent example of this subgenre.

I liked Eve right from the start, although I also felt very bad for her. I can’t imagine how awful it must feel to not know who you are, but I think Eden do a great job portraying Eve’s feelings about this. Although Eve has been through the ringer, she’s strong and determined and even a bit stubborn and I just loved that about her.

I also really liked Gabe, the hero of the story. He runs LOST, a company that helps find missing people. He has his own demons which led to him starting this company. Gabe is definitely the kind of hero I like. He’s strong and smart, and determined the help the best he can.

I was definitely, 100%, shipping Gabe and Eve, but I do wish there was more time spent during the story developing their relationship. So much of the story revolved around figuring out who Eve was, and if she really was a victim of a serial killer, and I would have preferred more in the romance department. But that is more due to personal preference. I do feel like the mystery was well written, though, and it wasn’t super easy to figure out who the baddie was.

I also felt like bits of the investigation felt a little unrealistic. Like how the police department welcomed LOST joining the investigation. Other bits, too, just didn’t felt quite realistic. But Broken is action packed, and it was so hard to put this book down. There isn’t a dull moment that is for sure. If you like Romantic Suspense, I think you’d like Broken by Cynthia Eden.

I am so excited to read this one, especially when its so easy to get into!!! That is one of the best qualities a author can put into a story. Love anything with romantic suspense, so I can’t wait even if there are parts that seem unrealistic.

  2. Nick @ Nick & Nereyda's Infinite Booklist

I enjoy romantic suspense a whole lot. That cover is very awkward and off-putting though. I think I’m going to give it a try even though the romance does seem like it could have used a bit more focus. I like the sound of the story.
Have you read Elle Kennedy’s Killer Instict series? It’s one of my favorite romantic suspense series!

I know, the cover sucks. But the book was good. It’s not a favorite, or one I’d want to re-read but I definitely l iked it.

I haven’t read Elle Kennedy, but I’m going to go look into her books right now!

Yes please! This is a new author to me but I like the sounds of it and I like that it’s a little darker. I can handle some unrealistic stuff and this sounds like I can work with it. This kind of sounds like the SEAL series that was so popular in the late 90s/early 2000s. Can’t remember the author but I LOVED them!

I just got my copy in the mail yesterday from you! I’m excited to give it a try even if romantic suspense isn’t my normal genre of choice. I am intrigued by your description of Eve’s character.

This definitely sounds like something I may like… though man, I really despise that cover!! >.< I'm sorry a bit of it seemed too unrealistic for you, but it sounds like overall you did enjoy a majority of the story. Great review!! 🙂
