Tall, dark, and lethal...

Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome — pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.

With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.

Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

I’m not a huge reader of romantic suspense. I often find it very stressful. But there are exceptions to everything, and I absolutely adore the Hard Ink series by Laura Kaye. Hard as It Gets is the perfect start to this addicting series.

Hard As It Gets is the first in the Hard Ink series about former Army Special Forces soldiers who were blamed for something that they didn’t do while deployed a few years ago. They’ve been separated since being back in the states, but that’s about to change.

Becca is the daughter of Nick’s ex-commander, and she comes to Nick because she’s worried about her younger brother, Charlie. Becca has ever met Nick, but when she gets a message from Nick telling her to go to Nick, she does. Nick is not really happy to see her, as he doesn’t have fond feelings towards her deceased father. Although he initially turns her away, it’s not long before he’s helping her find her brother, and learning a lot more about the crazy that went down that ended his military career.

Becca and Nick were the best characters ever. I fell for them fast and hard. They are both genuinely nice and caring people. I could relate to Becca so easily. She’s kind and nice but also determined to do what she needs to to find her brother. Even when Nick initially turns her away, she doesn’t let that stop her.

And Nick. Swoony! He’s one tough, former military guy, but he’s dealing with a lot of guilt over what happened overseas. Even when he first refuses to help Becca, he knows he’s being a jerk, and quickly reconsiders. And when he realizes that Becca is in real danger, he’s quickly jumps in to help her. He makes me swoon, friends.

And whoa, the chemistry between Nick and Becca is something fierce. They do fall for each other very quickly, which is common in romantic suspense, but I was so buying it. They truly needed to be together. There are some seriously steamy scenes, too.

Nick eventually gets the remaining members from her unit to help him out, and it was great to see all the guys reunited. They all have some issues to work through, but it’s super good for them to get back together.

Hard as It Gets is super fast paced, and completely addicting. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I am totally sucked into this Hard Ink series. I love the guys, I love the girls, I love the action and the mystery and the romance.

(p.s. I kind of hate this cover. It’s weird. Also, while the fact that all the titles in this series contain the word “hard” ties the series together, it’s almost impossible to actually remember the title to specific books. It’s very frustrating, but still the books are totally amazing!)

I’m glad you are enjoying this series! It does sound interesting especially if the characters are likable.

  2. Nick

I need to read a Laura Kaye book ASAP. I think I might start with this series since I do love romantic suspense and I’m loving the sound of this super swoony hero.
    The chemistry sounds amazing too!
    Wonderful review, Quinn!

If you like romantic suspense, I think you’d really like this series, Nick. It’s very action packed, and unbelievable, but I so don’t care because the characters are wonderful, and the heroes are particularly swoonworthy!

I’ve got this one and book two, but just need to get around to them. Haha! Yes, the titles are hard to keep distinguished.

I’m glad you enjoyed this one! I have most (if not all) of the books in this series, but I’ve only read one of the novellas. I need to get on that soon. I’ve enjoyed Laura’s other books.

I wish I totally knew what it was, Quinn. I didn’t HATE them. I think I gave the ones I read a 3.5ish. They just didn’t have her normal style that I think is so amazing. I know she got a lot of new readers with this series so that’s wonderful for her, ya know? I just prefer her older stuff. These just kinda fell in the average read category for me instead of the usually OMG amazing which I expect from her.
