Montana Hendrix has found her calling—working with therapy dogs. With a career she loves in a hometown she adores, she's finally ready to look for her own happily ever after. Could one of her dogs help her find Mr. Right…or maybe Dr. Right?

Surgeon Simon Bradley prefers the sterility of the hospital to the messiness of real life, especially when real life includes an accident-prone mutt and a woman whose kisses make him want what he knows he can't have. Scarred since childhood, he avoids emotional entanglement by moving from place to place to heal children who need his skillful touch. Can his growing feelings for Montana lead him to find a home in Fool's Gold, or will he walk away, taking her broken heart with him?

Towards the end of 2016 I discovered how wonderful the books in Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold series were. So when I was struggling trying to find something to read, I decided to jump back into Fool’s Gold, with Only Yours. While I did enjoy this one, it’s far from my favorite of the series.

What’s the Story:

Surgeon Simon Bradley, a burn specialist, is in Fool’s Gold temporarily while he treats a little girl who was badly burned in an accident. That’s what Simon does, he moves from place to place helping burn victims. He never stays long. When he first meets Montana, he’s at his nasty best and berates her for an accident. But, of course, they get past that, and start having feelings for each other. But Simon still plans to leave.

What I Liked:

  • Only Yours has a strong start. Right away there is some mayhem and Montana and Simon meet, albeit it’s not a pleasant meeting. If only the whole book could be that strong.
  • Montana was great! She’s struggled trying to find her place, and what kind of career she wants. But she’s figured it out now, and works for a company that provides therapy dogs all over town.
  • Montana is so easy to relate to. She’s smart and intelligent, but sometimes lost, as well. But she’s finding her way, and putting down roots.
  • Simon was an interesting hero; sometimes I loved him, and sometimes he really annoyed me (see below about that).
  • Simon has some baggage. He was badly burned as a child. That incident has left both physical and emotional scars, and he hasn’t worked through them.
  • I loved how devoted Simon was to his patients. It’s so clear he would do anything he could to help them. He’s the kind of doctor I would want helping people I loved.
  • I did want Montana and Simon to be together, but there were times when I just wanted Montana to dump his ass, and find someone else.
  • All the cute therapy dogs!!!!! And Fluffy, who was not therapy dog material, but oh so adorable nonetheless.
  • As always, the town of Fool’s Gold is always a highlight in this series. Everyone helps people out; basically, it’s the kind of place everyone would love to live in, even if everyone knows your business.

What I Struggled With:

  • Simon’s insecurities about his scars and what happened to him as a child got kind of old. While I did understand his issues in part, it started to feel like one big pity party that Simon was throwing for himself.
  • What happened to Simon when he was a child is horrific, but it was such a long time ago, and I felt like he should have been able to work through at least some of it.
  • Sometimes the way Simon talked about himself was odd. He constantly called himself a monster (because he had a few scars – get over yourself Simon!). And then there was all that business of him walking in darkness. Seriously, people do not talk like that.

Final Thoughts:

Only Yours by Susan Mallery is a solid addition to the Fool’s Gold series, but there are stronger books in this series.

Can you believe I’ve never read a book by Susan Mallery?? I’ve wanted to though!
I’m with you on Simon’s insecurities. I mean you can never forget something like that, but if it’s been ages, he should have been to work through at least part of it. I would be very frustrated with how he keeps putting himself down for his scars. But cute therapy dogs though!! <3

Man, it’s been ages since I read this book or any of the other books in the series. Montana is one of the triplets, right? I quit the series after their stories because each story was more of the same stuff and I was just over the whole town by then.

I remember Simon but not much about Montana, other than she was one of three. Still, it was great reading through your review and remembering Fools Gold. For me, that series started out great but fizzled out for me. By book 6, I called it quits.

  3. Lover Of Romance

I definitely think that I need to try this author and NOW!! This book sounds wonderful. I do love a wounded hero working through issues. but it sounds like it was dragged on a bit too much which is a downer.

I’m glad the series is proving good stuff. I’ve seen it around and want to try it eventually. Yeah, Simon does sound like he needs a ‘physician heal thyself’ moment. Love the idea of a snarly first meet and the therapy dogs along with his burn injury healer career.
