In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder...

As the captain of Field County's ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise "Lou" Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in an instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he's never felt more alive...even if keeping her safe may just kill him.

Lou's new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she's determined to make it on her own terms...no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themselves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou-and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.

I am just loving Katie Ruggle’s romantic suspense novels. After positively adoring Gone Too Deep, I knew I had to read more from her Search and Rescue series, so I decided to jump to the book that began the series, Hold Your Breath. And friends, I was not disappointed at all! Hold Your Breath by Katie Ruggle was un-putdownable, and I am now a total Katie Ruggle fangirl.

Hold Your Breath is about Louise “Lou” Sparks, a fairly new resident to Simpson, Colorado, and Callum Cook, the head of Field County’s ice rescue dive team. Lou is training to join the Rescue Dive Team, and at a training out on the ice, Lou inadvertently discovers a dead body. She feels sort of responsible for the this dead man, and starts her own investigation. And somehow she pulls Callum into her investigation. And of course these two fall for each other.

This is the third Ruggle book I’ve read, and something that I really love about her books is that they are filled not only with lots of action scenes, but so much character development. They are the perfect romantic suspense in my opinion. Ruggle made me love Lou and Callum so much! Lou is just so spunky. She’s trying to restart her life, far from her family, living in this small town in Colorado. It’s a lot different from her old life, and she is loving it. I really admired Lou. She’s tough and brave, but she has her own vulnerabilities too. It was really impossible for me to not love her.

Callum in a lot of ways is the exact opposite of Lou. He’s on the quiet side, and wow does he like things in order. I loved seeing Lou pick on Callum about his super neat ways. But it was never mean-spirited, and she really did appreciate Callum for exactly who he was. In Hold Your Breath, we never really know what Callum is thinking, but it’s easy to see how much he likes Lou. I loved how hard working Callum was, determined to do his job well. He’s totally responsible and a nice guy and really, there was nothing NOT to love about Callum.

Katie Ruggle does the action super well, and Hold Your Breath is a complete page-turner. Once I started, I couldn’t stop! But even with all the action, the characters are what make this book fantastic. Besides getting to know Lou and Callum, I loved meeting the other members of the Dive Rescue Team and the other personality-filled residents of Simpson.

The narrator was Rachel Dulude and she was wonderful! She was excellent at expressing Lou’s sense of humor and all her sassiness. She reminded me a lot of Amanda Ronconi, the narrator of Molly Harper’s books, and that is definitely a good thing.

Hold Your Breath by Katie Ruggle is romantic suspense at its best! With lots of action and a mystery to solve (that is never completely solved, it will be by the end of the series), I couldn’t put this one down. I can’t wait to read more.

That is so awesome that you’re enjoying this series so much. It sounds really great, and I’m here for all the character development. This is one series I’ll definitely be on the look-out for!
    Great review!

This series is just so good. I’ve read books 1 & 3 now and loved them. I might skip book 2 because it involves motorcycle clubs and I have a real issue with them. I don’t know. Anyway, I still need to read book 4. I would recommend reading these in order, though. I don’t mind skipping around (I kind of like it) but it could be an issue for others.

Yes, Rachel is perfect as a narrator for this series. I have been loving Ruggle’s brand of romantic suspense. This series just gets better and the way all the stories interweave…brilly.

Seriously, Ruggle does romantic suspense so well! I am just loving her books. I loved book three (I’m reading them out of order which probably wasn’t the best decision, but I’m going with it) so much! George was just *sigh*

I’m liking her k9 series, too.

So great that you found a new author to love! I haven’t read anything by her, but since romantic suspense is my favorite subgenre of romance novels, this one sounds really good. I’ll look for this at the library!

I really enjoyed this series and was glad it started with Callum and Lou so I could get glimpses of them throughout the rest of the series. If you don’t already have it, make sure you get the freebie prequel if you want more Callum. 🙂

So basically I should just get all her books is what I”m hearing! This sounds awesome as have the rest of her books. This is one of those authors that I really want to read and swear I’m going to cut down on review books so it can happen yet it hasn’t quite happened yet. I’m really looking forward to starting. The only problem is figuring out which book to start with!

Haha. I don’t think you could go wrong reading all her books. I still haven’t read all her books. I’ve read 4, though, and I’ve loved them all. I would start with this one. The Search and Rescue series is a bit more connected that most romance series. There is this overarching mystery that is a big part of each book, although each book focuses on a different couple. I haven’t minded reading them out of order, but in general, I would recommend it. And this is the first book.
