In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder...
Ice rescue diver Derek Warner never meant to be a hero. But when two little girls go missing, he's the first in line to bring them home-even if that means scouring the wilderness with the woman he once loved and lost, Artemis Rey.
Artemis has never stopped wanting Derek. Now, racing to find the girls before it's too late, minutes turn to hours. Night falls. Old flames rekindle. And a danger grows in the darkest wilderness that may be more than even the Search and Rescue brotherhood can hope to face...
Probably my favorite new-to-me author that I’ve discovered in 2017 is Katie Ruggle. She seriously writes the best kind of romantic suspense. So I was pretty excited to read On His Watch the free novella prequel to Ruggle’s Search and Rescue series. However, novellas are tricky. On His Watch by Katie Ruggle was cute, but it wasn’t a home run for me.
On His Watch focuses on ice rescue diver Derek, whom we met in the first novel in this series Hold Your Breath. While doing a demonstration for a class of kids, two little girls disappear, and Derek and his old flame, Artemis, search for them. As Artemis and Derek search for the little girls during a snow storm, they start falling for each other again.
I should say right off the bat, I don’t love second chance romances. I’m not sure why, exactly, but it just isn’t a trope I like. So the premise for the romance of On His Watch was not really my cup of tea. But Katie Ruggle is fantastic, and there was a lot I did like about this one.
I definitely had a great time spending time with Derek. Derek was so funny in Hold Your Breath, and his antics are definitely visible here. I also liked Artemis, a teacher at the school who’s visiting for a field trip. She’s sweet, loves the kids she teaches, and still has feelings for Derek, even after their break up years ago. I absolutely liked Derek and Artemis together, too, although they certainly aren’t my favorite couple ever. Some of the events that happened while Derek and Artemis were looking for the little girls seemed a little out there, but I was okay with it.
Honestly, what I loved most about On His Watch wasn’t about Derek or Artemis. What I loved most was seeing Lou and Callum’s (the couple from Hold Your Breath) first meeting. It was adorable, and exactly what I would expect from these two. I also loved getting a very quick glance at George, the hero from Gone Too Deep.
I think fans of the Search and Rescue series would enjoy reading On His Watch by Katie Ruggle. However, if you haven’t read this series yet, I would start with Hold Your Breath, and maybe read this one after. But this one isn’t a must-read.
